Overcoming the unexpected…
Hopefully this commission has now arrived at it’s destination quite a long way north of me. It’s another one where I didn’t get to meet the client in person, which is never a problem in these days of the interweb an all that!
The ring you see in the photos started off as six inherited family rings, of varying gold carats. They were obviously incredibly special to my client, but they told me that they never wear them as they just weren’t their style.
The brief was to combine all of the rings and create a piece that had “a bit of bling” but that was also wearable every day. This is my own brief for pretty much every piece I make, so all good there.
There was really only one small obstacle to overcome when I made this, in that because I hadn’t actually seen the jewellery in the flesh before I did my drawings and we agreed on a design, I hadn’t got the sizes of the stones quite right. I thought the stones were a bit smaller than they actually were, which meant changing the original design slightly and using a kind of hybrid bezel/halo setting for the stones either side if the main central one.
It also took a bit longer than I was expecting as all of the stones were all “old cut”. I love them and think they’re so beautiful, but they’re never a regular shape, which leads to more time consuming stone setting making! That’s just how it goes though. There’s often something unexpected that crops up on each piece that I make, but overcoming that is just part of the fun of making it!
Here’s the pics…
